I was dubious at first - yet another slightly gimmiky browser thing - but I gave it a second chance and realized it slots in my life pretty well.

I've hooked up my myspace, youtube, flickr and this blog to it (I'd like to see Vimeo up there as well.) And it works really well.

Anyway early days yet but so far its most definately a thumbs up from me.

Here is me having a play with the displacement filter in photoshop - and pushing my tablet, illustrator brush selection and laptop to the limit!

It was fun to do - I had to do a clever bit of layer minimizing to get around the size of the file as I was working - but thats all good practice for workflow.

Anyhow I think I'll be mucking around with a photo next - when I get the time that is.

Its not the weather for them but...

I had a chance the other day to start working through a few ideas that I am maybe going to develop into screen prints (I am hopefully doing a workshop at Print Club - soon fingers crossed!)

Anyway I am working though the ideas based on a few iconic bits of clothing left lying around my flat! I hope to work through the illustrations a little more and maybe actually work from my hand drawn sketches as these were done in photoshop - but I think the colours and typography are nearly there!

"Muddy Waters was an excellent southern-style cook. He often entertained friends and family at his suburban Chicago home and it was certain that he would be in his kitchen preparing a feast to keep his guests satisfied.

Muddy always prepared his meals from "scratch" using his personal recipes, many dating back to his days as a young man in Mississippi as well as during his years living in Chicago."

I really like the idea that you see what musician's liked to cook - I may even do Muddy Waters food night!

Uniqlo - all fashion labels take note (in fact all largish companies take note).

Nice marketing. (especially online)

I think their entire strategy was based around some sh*t hot online ideas.

Also their current print campaign at Oxford Circus tube is great.

Simplicity.

It seems to be behind their entire design philosophy (from their clothes to their marketing). The message is clear and singular and it works so well. They communicate the important things simply and let their creativity loose where appropriate - the only way forward.

Shopping experience

Their flagship store is again - simple and the all the assistants are friendly and helpful (I can't believe how many brands get this wrong - still!!). Their online store is simple and easy to use, the user journey is great when you want to buy something.

Overall though the one stand out plus point is that they have their product right - its just well made simple clothing that speaks for itself and the rest of it kind of fits around that.

Not sure who's behind it all but I have been very impressed - all they need to do is make their line ethically sound and they have it all covered...lets hope more will follow.

I really used to dislike the whole trailed graphics from your cursor effect - it was gimmicky and bascially a little bit annoying - I thought it had gone and long been forgotten and then I saw these guys...wildcardinc.jp

And I was blown away - they have a choice of 5 to flick through and I like them all!

Mapping for human rights

I just read an article on Ping Mag on how Amnesty International are using geospatial mapping technology to track human rights - on the one hand its really quite alarming to see the actual human cost (I have always associated "maps content" with fun stuff like google earth) but on the other its great that this technology is being used for the highlight situations like this. For some reason when content is put in front of me like this it seems less diluted than it would have on a tv show or newspaper article - its just cold hard facts.
